Bombus (Bombus) cryptarum

(Fabricius, 1775)

Taxon referenced in page Bombus of Turkey

B. cryptarum is hard to recognise and has been regarded as a valid species only recently (Rasmont, 1981) - and then not by everyone. This explains why it has been explicitly dealt with in rather few articles.
In Anatolia, Özbek (1997) mentions an altitudinal range of 1600 to 2800 m, Rasmont & Flagothier (1996), a range of 1770 to 3000 m, with 80 % of the catch between 1850 and 3000 m. In this region, the taxon is clearly alpine.
Rasmont (1988) regards B. cryptarum as a forest species in the French Massif Central. The same is not true for the higher stages of the Alps, the Balkan and Anatolia, where the species lives on open ground and even in steppic surroundings.
In E. Anatolia, the authors observed that B. cryptarum armeniensis is most often associated with B. alagesianus, B. erzurumensis, B. oezbeki and B. melanurus. All of them are characteristic of the alpine steppic stage.
In Anatolia, for B. cryptarum armeniensis, Özbek (1997) lists 64 plant species, mainly Anchusa azurea Miller, A. officinalis L., Centaurea glastifolia L., Cephalaria alpina (L.) Roemer & Schultes, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., Epilobium angustifolium L., Gentiana gelida, Lamium album L., Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens L., Taraxacum androssovii and Vaccinium myrtillus L. We found 15 plant taxa, mainly Campanula cf. tridentata Schreber (30 cases), Cephalaria cf. procera Fisch. & Lall. (9), Vicia pannonica Crantz (7) and Symphytum asperum Lepechin (6).
While it shows a clear preference for Ericaceae in N and W Europe, in the alpine steppic areas where it lives in Asia Minor, B. cryptarum may probably be regarded as an opportunist, just as B. lucorum and B. terrestris.

& Lall. (9), Vicia pannonica Crantz (7) and Symphytum asperum Lepechin (6).

Bunların başlıcaları Anchusa azurea Miller, A. officinalis L., Centaurea glastifolia L., Cephalaria alpina (L.) Roemer & Schultes, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., Epilobium angustifolium L., Gentiana gelida, Lamium album L., Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens L., Taraxacum androssovii ve Vaccinium myrtillus L.'dir. Biz çalışmalarımız sırasında 15 bitki taksası belirledik. Bunlar Campanula cf. tridentata Schreber (30 örnek), Cephalaria cf. procera Fisch. & Lall.
