Species in Clavipanurgus can easily be grouped based on morphological resemblance. Clavipanurgus anatolicus fall then in the group of species displaying complex structures associated with males sexparts, previously defined as the stylus-clavatus species group (Patiny, 2003)

This species is endemic in Southern Morocco and consequently completely disjuncted of the other species distribution (almost endemic in Turkey and western Arabian Peninsula). This species is seemingly closely related to the eastern species with less modified sex parts and associated structures (impressus species-group).

Clavipanurgus sculpturatus is easily recognisable thanks to its size (larger than any other species in the genus) and strong enlargement of the male gonostyli. It is also the most westernly distributed species, with well identified populations in Balkans.
